MANILA – Rio Paralympics bronze medalist Josephine Medinaand chess champs Eugene Torre and Janelle Mae Frayna are set to receivecash incentives from no less than President Rodrigo Duterte.

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chair William “Butch” Ramirez saidthat the three will receive their cash incentives after standing outin their respective competitions abroad.

Ramirez added that Medina is slated to receive P1 million, while Torreand Frayna will have P100,000 and P50,000, respectively, based on theRepublic Act 10699, or the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits andIncentives Act.

“They deserve to be feted for giving honor and prestige to thecountry,” Ramirez said in a statement. “It was stated in the law thatwill receive that amount for winning a medal in internationaltournament.”

Medina of table tennis was the lone bright spot for the five-manFilipino contingent in the Rio Paralympics as she bagged a bronze medal inthe women’s singles Class 8 event with her 11-6, 11-6, 11-7 sweep overJuliane Wolf of Germany.
The 46-year-old Medina’s feat marked the country’s second Paralympicmedal, first since powerlifter Adeline Dumapong-Ancheta clinched abronze medal in Sydney, Australia 16 years ago.

Torre, on the other hand, bagged a bronze medal as he scored 10 pointsout of a possible 11 on nine victories and two draws on board threein the 42nd World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan.
In the same competition, Frayna became the first-ever Filipina to earnthe women’s grandmaster and international master ranks for scoring sevenof the possible 11 points in the 11 round event.
Unlike in the previous administration, Duterte has openly showed hissupport to athletes representing the country as he believes thatsports will be another tool in preventing children from experimenting with drugs./PN
