ROXAS City – Informal settlers along the Panay River will be relocated.
The Save Panay River Council, along with the departments of Environment and Natural Resources and of Public Works and Highways, will inventory the settlers and the structures on or near the river.
Gov. Antonio del Rosario on Sept. 5 signed Executive Order No. 6 creating the Save Panay River Council and Task Force.
Del Rosario recently learned from Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Valentin Talabero that the Panay River is classified “Class C,” which means it is unsafe for bathing.
A documentary on the situation of the Panay River, made by a team under the capitol’s information arm, showed the different causes of river pollution, including illegal structures, trash, houses, and pigpens.
Del Rosario, who also leads the river council, said he wants to protect the river for the benefit of small fishers and the “future generations.” (Klair Joy Emperado and Michelle Oropio, Capiz Aksyon News Center/PN)
