ILOILO City – The Region 6 offices of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and Philippine Information Agency (PIA), and Central Philippine University (CPU) forged a partnership to strengthen public disaster preparedness.
A memorandum of understanding was signed to implement the joint program “Buylog sa Pagpangaman” highlighted by a weekly TV program with the same title and will be shown on the CPU Channel.
The program aims to impart knowledge on disaster risk reduction through various topics and capacitate CPU to become a disaster-resilient university.
OCD regional director Rosario Cabrera said media platforms, including television, play crucial roles in minimizing injuries and loss of lives and properties from disasters.
“Effective communication is vital in each aspect of disaster risk reduction and management from imparting knowledge and information to warning of threats of a disaster, calling various government and non-government organizations and facilitating disaster risk reduction in general,” she said.
She stressed the significance of widespread public awareness and making citizens informed of the different hazards present in their respective communities.
PIA regional director Ma. Janet Mesa emphasized the importance of the partnership of the organizations to help disseminate vital information on disaster preparedness.
“We at PIA cannot do it alone because we need as many people to help us inform people about the need for preparation,” she said.
She said agencies and organizations need to work together to address problems concerning disasters and the worldwide issue of climate change.
CPU president Dr. Teodoro Robles said the university is privileged to be part of the partnership that will help educate people on how to prepare for disasters.
“We understand the importance of successfully communicating to our communities the processes and steps they need to be aware of so they can prepare for any circumstance,” he said.
He added that informing and educating people are measures to reduce the impact brought about by disasters and eventualities.
Aside from the weekly TV program, the MOA also stipulated the conduct of DRRM and climate change adaptation capacity-building activities and programs, development of information education campaign materials for production and dissemination, documentation of best practices and lessons learned by CPU, and provision of internship/practicum for students.
