MANILA – Perlas Pilipinas opened its2016 Seaba Women’s Championship campaign with a 69-43 triumph overSingapore at the Bukit Serindit Indoor Stadium inMalacca, Malaysia.
Chack Cabinbin led the way with 16 points, with 13 coming in theopening half, for the national women’s basketball team, which aims to dominatethe seven-team tournament that will run until Monday.
Camille Sambille chipped in with 10 markers, including eight in thefirst 20 minutes, while veteran Allana Lim had nine markers for thesquad backed by Blackwater-Women.
The Philippines went off to a slow start late Tuesdayas Singapore unloaded sixunanswered points, until the Filipinas played with a sense of urgencybehind Cabinbin and Sambille to pose a 46-27 lead at the half.
Already with a huge lead heading into the second half, the Philippinespulled away further in the second half with a backbreaking 21-4scoring run to build its largest lead of the match in the finalquarter.
“We were a little bit sluggish,” said Philippines head coach PatrickAquino. “But I’ve told the players, you’ve got to work hard from startto finish, and you can’t have that kind of start from teams likeMalaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.”
The Philippines was set to face Laos on Wednesday night, Vietnamon Thursday, Indonesia on Friday, the defending champion Malaysia onSaturday, and Thailand on Sunday.
After the single-round eliminations, the top team will be declared thechampion. In case of standing deadlocks,the win-over-the-other rule will be applied./PN
