Meralco, Ginebramarch to PBA Gov’s Cup semis

MANILA – The Meralco Bolts bucked a slow start to score a 105-82 victory over the Mahindra Enforcer in the quarterfinals round of the 2016 Oppo PBA Governor’s Cup on Saturday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

Reinforcement Allen Durham led the way with 24 points, 16 rebounds and six assists for the Bolts, which will face the winner between the TNT Katropa and Phoenix Fuel Masters matchup in the best-of-five semifinals.

Rookie Chris Newsome chipped in 19 markers, while Clifford Hodge and Jared Dillinger contributed 14 and 12 points respectively for the Bolts, which is gunning for its first-ever finals appearance.

Trailing by as much as 15 points, 35-20, in the second frame, the Bolts went on a scoring run behind Newsome, Durham, Dillinger and Hodge to snatch a 50-45 lead at halftime.

The Bolts continued with a surge in the third frame on early baskets from Jimmy Alapag, Bryan Faundo, Newsome, and Dillinger as it build its largest lead of the match at 92-67 on a basket by Hodge.

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings also made it to the next round of the playoffs after hanging on to a 109-104 win over the Alaska Aces behind clutch baskets of import Justin Brownlee.

The Kings went up by as much as 26 points early in the game on the hot shooting of Tenorio and Brownlee but the Aces made a last-minute run to come to within 105-104 on baskets by Calvin Abueva and Vic Manuel.

But a banking three-pointer by Brownlee followed by three missed free throws by Abueva on the other end clinched the victory for the Kings, which will face the San Miguel Beermen in the best-of-five semifinals on Monday night./PN
