MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte is poised to discuss the Philippines’ territorial dispute with China during his visit to Vietnam from Sept. 28 to 29.
Spokesperson Charles Jose of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Duterte will underline the country’s commitment to maintaining peace, stability and security in the area of the West Philippine Sea.
“It will be in the context of reaffirming our firm commitment to the peaceful settlement of disputes and our adherence to the rule of law, and the same time to reiterate our commitment also to continue working with Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) for the full and effective implementation of the 2005 [Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea] and for the early conclusion of the legally-binding Code of Conduct,” said Jose.
Meanwhile, the President is scheduled to meet with President Tran Đai Quang in Hanoi. He will also pay a courtesy call on other top leaders of the Viatnamese government.
Duterte will also meet with nearly 4,000 overseas Filipino workers working and living in Vietnam.
Jose said other topics of discussion will include maritime cooperation, enhancement of law enforcement and defense cooperation, increasing two-way trade and investments, strengthening joint cultural activities, and heightened exchanges in agriculture and fisheries./PN
