SAN JOSE, Antique – Pet dogs and cats have been vaccinated against rabies for free at the EBJ Freedom Park.
Antique joined the international observance of the 10th World Rabies Day on Wednesday.
Provincial Veterinarian Romeo Magdato also encouraged Antiqueños to have their pets vaccinated at their municipal agriculture offices.
Themed “Rabies: Educate, Vaccinate and Eliminate,” this year’s observance calls for proper care for animals by regularly subjecting them to anti-rabies vaccination.
Before the vaccination, the Antique Best Canine Club, Inc. held a dog parade around major streets here to raise awareness on the proper care of pets.
Magdato also called for support from local government officials by formulating activities relative to rabies prevention.
He said the government hopes to make the Philippines rabies-free by 2030.
Out of the 53,295 dogs in Antique, the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian has vaccinated against rabies 11,359.
So far this year, two people — one from each of Sibalom and San Remigio towns — died after they were bitten by dogs positive for rabies.
“We urge everyone to seek help from medical experts, not quack doctors, in case they are bitten by dogs or cats,” said Magdato. (PIA/PN)
