MANILA – Sen. Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV is pushing for a three-year tax exemption for Filipino freelancers.
Senate Bill No. (SBN) 351 also seeks to ensure easier registration for freelancers in the Bureau of Internal Revenue.
“Let us waste no time in ensuring that they are not inconvenienced by red tape and that they are protected from difficult, even fraudulent clients,” Aquino said in filing SBN. 351.
The measure also gives them “the power to demand from their employer what they are rightfully due under their agreement.”
According to the senator, one of the biggest challenges a freelancer faces is non-payment.
With the passage of the bill, an employer who refuses to pay wages will be penalized with a fine up to P250,000. Aggrieved freelancers are also advised to file a civil case against erring employers.
“Freelancing is no longer just a temporary state while looking for your dream job. For many intelligent and skilled Filipinos with a strong network and marketable services, it is a long-term career choice,” Aquino ended./PN
