BACOLOD City β A fishing boat captain and resident of Hinigaran, Negros Occidental was shot by alleged Bantay Dagat members in Guimaras province.
F/B Melβs 1 boat captain Eric De La Cruz of Barangay 2, Hinigaran town was hit on the nape and face, according to Chief Inspector Alan Gary Resuma, Hinigaran police chief.
He was rushed to an infirmary in Hinigaran but later transferred to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital here.
The 39-year-old De La Cruz and his companions were fishing at the territorial waters of Guimaras around 1:30 p.m. on Monday when they saw a Bantay Dagat pump boat laden with four people, two of whom clad in police uniform.
Bantay Dagat (sea patrol) is a group of community-based volunteers under the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources working to protect the territorial waters of local government units.
The four people ordered the fishers to stop, but the latter ignored them. That was when the former fired at the fishing boat, initial investigation showed.
Hinigaran police were conducting a follow-up investigation in coordination with counterparts in Guimaras./PN
