MANILA – The Bureau of Customs Transformers debuted in the Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Reinforced Conference in style after a 25-23, 25-18, 25-22 sweep over the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons on Monday night at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Alyssa Valdez led the way with 18 points, on 14 attacks and four service aces, for the Transformers, which moved up to second place in the standings at 1-0, to tie with the Laoag Power Smashers.
Rosemarie Vargas chipped in 17 markers, including 15 attacks, while LiletMabbayad contributed 10 points for the Transformers, which played sans their Thai imports due to problems with their papers.
“Veterans naman ‘yungnaiwansaamin, so kahitwalang imports kaya,” said Transformers head coach Sherwin Meneses, who will hope for a second straight win against the Power Smashers tonight.
The Lady Maroons jumped to an early 11-7 lead but the Transformers, behind Valdez and Vargas, wiped it out for a 19-all score. After an exchange of hits, the Transformers escaped with a 25-23 set win on late hits by Valdez.
Both teams were knotted in a see-saw battle early in the second set with the Transformers holding on to a slim 16-12 advantage. But errors by the Lady Maroons down the stretch allowed the Transformers to take a 2-0 set lead.
The Transformers had another poor start in the third frame but quickly recovered as it came to within 16-15 at the break. Despite a tight challenge from the Lady Maroons, the Transformers still came out victorious via late hits by Vargas.
Nicole Tiamzon led the way with 14 points, while Marian Buitre and Justine Dorog added five markers each for the Lady Maroons, which slid down to a 0-1 win-loss record along with the Philippine Air Force Jet Spikers./PN
