DUMAGUETE City – Mayors in Negros Oriental have signified their intent to help establish a drug rehabilitation center on a property offered by the Diocese of Dumaguete.
The local government of Amlan town considers putting up the center on a 14-hectare lot in Barangay Silab, Mayor Gino dela Cruz disclosed during a recent League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) Negros Oriental chapter meeting.
The LMP – Negros Oriental welcomed the offer of the diocese headed by Bishop Julito Cortes.
According to dela Cruz, the Philippines needs drug rehabilitation centers that can take in 70,000 drug dependents.
The number represents only 10 percent of the more than 700,000 who surrendered as a result of Oplan Double Barrel, said the league treasurer.
So far only four drug rehab centers were approved for construction, and these can accommodate only over 12,000, he said.
Dela Cruz said the Diocese of Dumaguete and the 7th Day Adventist church were scheduled to meet with Department of Health secretary Paulyn Jean Rosell Ubial on Oct. 19 for guidance in putting up the center.
Socrates Villamor, head of the Local Health Support Division of the Department of Health – Negros Island Region, said provinces were asked to submit proposals for drug rehabilitation centers.
Negros Oriental suggested expanding an existing center run by a nongovernment organization in Barangay Talay here. (PNA)
