BACOLOD City – A woman died when the car she was driving turned upside down in a sugarcane field in Barangay Granada around 3:45 a.m. on Sunday.
The 20-year-old Maureen Gareza of Granada Heights in the same village was with five MassKara Festival dancers. The dancers just came from practice.
Gareza, an Architecture student at the La Consolacion College, was taken to a hospital but declared “dead on arrival.”
The dancers sustained minor injuries.
At the time they were bound for Barangay Estefania to send one of the dancers, the 21-year-old Lester Rivero, home, investigation showed.
Police said Gareza’s boyfriend, Denbear Jocson, was one of the dancers.
Rivero said they drank liquor after practice.
He told the police they almost hit a motorcycle — which had no brake lights — so to avoid it, Gareza swerved the vehicle (plate number: MKK-794), which sped toward the sugarcane field./PN
