MANILA – New Bilibid Prison drug lord Jaybee Sebastian on Monday denied Sen. Leila de Lima’s claim that he was a government asset.
Sebastian, leader of the Presidio gang at the national penitentiary, was among the high profile inmates who testified at yesterday’s House hearing on the alleged illegal drug trade inside the New Bilibid Prison.
“No. ‘Yun gusto kong linawin dito, your Honor,” the inmate said as response to Rep. Reynaldo Umali’s query. Umali is the chairman of the Committee on Justice investigating the matter.
Denying that the national penitentiary inmate collected drug money to fund her senatorial candidacy, de Lima, who was tagged to the Bilibid drug trade, revealed last month that Sebastian was an asset.
“The reason why I am saying that he is an asset is because to (also) dispel ‘yung mga haka-haka na naman, ‘yung mga malicious insinuations na the reason why hindi na muna siya sinama dun sa Bilibid 19 is because ‘favored’, ‘protektado’,” the former Justice secretary explained.
But, Sebastian admitted he raised P10 million between March to May 2015 for de Lima’s campaign funds. Her ex-security aide Jonel Sanchez was collecting the payola on behalf of the senator, he added.
The camp of Sebastian, meanwhile, requested the justice department to place the drug lord under Witness Protection Program.
Sec. Vitaliano Aguirre II said he is not yet convinced that he needs to be put under the program.
“There are so many things more they can testify on if they can convince the DOJ,” the secretary said./PN
