MANILA – The San Beda Red Lions hopes to clinch the NCAA Season 92 men’s seniors basketball crown when it faces the Arellano University Chiefs in Game 2 of the best-of-three finals today at SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Red Lions moved closer to bagging its 20th NCAA championship, ninth overall in the last 11 seasons, following an 88-85 victory over the Chiefs in Game 1 of the series last Thursday.
The Red Lions went up by as much as 16 points in the game but the Chiefs came alive in the second half. However, San Beda leaned on the crucial baskets of Robert Bolick to seal the win.
“In Game 2 on Tuesday, it’s gonna be our hardest game – our hardest win,” said Red Lions head coach Michael Jay Jarin.
“I know (Arellano) coach Jerry (Codiñera) and his boys will make adjustments. He’s gonna be ready, he’s gonna watch the tape. He’s gonna rest his boys and prepare his players for Game 2,” he added. “We will do the same thing.”
Codiñera, for his part, said he is still optimistic that his squad will not be repeating the mistakes they committed in Game 1 to pull off a Game 2 victory and force a deciding match on Thursday.
“We weren’t able to execute defensively, offensively (in Game 1). We’re just one basket away normally, nakaka-execute kami doon,” Codiñera said. “We just have to start better, play better.”
“I still always look at the positive side that we beat them before and last year. It’s just that, yung adjustment, when they go small and play zone we have to take it. Just keep on shooting kapag libre, itira iwasan ying pasa ng pasa,” he added.
This marks the second time the Red Lions and Chiefs have met in the NCAA championship series. The last one was during Season 89 when the Red Lions defeated the Chiefs, 2-1./PN
