MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte does not need a foreign public relations firm to improve his image abroad, Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III said.
“I don’t think sanay siya sa mga ganyan,” said Pimentel. “It’s addressed to his good judgment. Why should we be too concerned about what they write about us abroad?”
In 2002, then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo admitted hiring the New York-based international public relations firm Burson-Martseller to “enhance the global image” of the country.
Getting “bad press” from foreign media organizations “is beyond our control,” Pimentel said.
French newspaper The Liberation recently described the tough-talking President a “serial killer.”
It underscored the death of thousands of drug suspects during Duterte’s first 100 days in office.
Its four-page news feature detailed the President’s expletive-laden tirade against Pope Francis and United States President Barack Obama.
Pimentel criticized the story as “unfair,” saying the newspaper failed to perform “in-depth investigative work” on the Duterte administration’s war on drugs before jumping to conclusions.
“I would not lose sleep over the [foreign media’s] coverage of the President,” said Pimentel. “Iba po ang kanilang standards doon. Iba ang kultura nila.”/PN
