BACOLOD City – Several pupils from Handumanan Elementary School I were hospitalized due to alleged acute gastroenteritis.
The City Health Office’s (CHO) Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit was investigating the cases.
Eight pupils were reportedly taken to the Dr. Pablo O. Torre Memorial Hospital and 22 were confined in the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital.
The CHO received information on the cases from the two hospitals yesterday, Assistant City Health Officer Jovy Vergara said.
Some pupils were taken to three other hospitals, while pupils admitted at the regional hospital have reached 100, radio reports at 8 p.m. yesterday said.
Acute gastroenteritis is characterized by a sudden onset of vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, the CHO said.
Dr. Grace Tan, chief of the Environmental Sanitation Division, said some parents told them their children had stomachache with vomiting as early as Tuesday.
Vergara said they took samples of juices sold by ambulant vendors at the school for a bacteriological examination.
She said the samples may be further taken to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine in Metro Manila for water analysis and evaluation.
The pupils were encouraged to eat at the school canteen and refrain from buying any food from ambulant vendors./PN
