MANILA – Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson expressed his support for the proposed P390-million program to commemorate the contributions of Filipino war veterans.
A program under the Department of National Defense (DND), “Love of Country Builders” plans to build military shrines.
Also, it proposes to commemorate historical events and honor soldiers through the publication of their heroic deeds.
“Instead of being viewed as ‘pathetic dependents’, Filipino war veterans may soon have a better chance of inspiring young Filipinos to love their country,” Lacson said during DND’s budget hearing
The legislator, former chief of the Philippine National Police, is a member of the Philippine Military Academy’s Class 1971.
Administrator Ernesto Carolina of the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office said the program seeks to encourage the youth to develop their “love of country.”
Carolina said that according to the country’s Constitution, authorities must prepare young people to be future defenders of the country.
“We’re so fixated every year paying arrears and benefits, the image of a veteran is a pathetic dependent on government and always asking for an increase in benefits. And hardly do they connect the veterans to the values they really represent – sacrifice, love of country, gallantry,” the undersecretary ended./PN
