MANILA – The Bureau of Customs Transformers dealt the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses its first loss in the Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Reinforced Conference, 25-17, 26-24, 25-15, on Saturday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Led by Thai imports Kanjana Kuthaisong and Natthanicha Jaisaen, as well as Alyssa Valdez, the Transformers recovered from a 26-24, 25-21, 25-21 loss to the Bali Pure Water Defenders to improve its record to 3-1.
The Transformers jumped to an 8-4 lead in the opening set behind back-to-back hits by Valdez. With the Golden Tigresses threatening to come close, Kuthaisong and Jaisaen hit one each for a 16-10 lead.
Errors by the Golden Tigresses coupled with conversions by Kuthaisong increased the Transformers lead to 21-12. The Golden Tigresses responded with hits from Cherry Rondina to come to within 22-17, but conversions by Jaisaen and Valdez ended the set.
It was the same story for the Transformers in the second set as it built an 8-4 lead. The Golden Tigresses then leaned on Rondina and Marivic Meneses to tie the score at 20-all.
The Golden Tigresses surged to a 23-21 edge behind Chlodia Cortez and Alina Bicar but the Transformers rallied back to tie the score at 24-all. An ace by Valdez followed by a booming hit by Kuthaisong handed the set to the Transformers.
The Transformers turned on the heat in the third set behind Valdez, Kuthaisong and Jaisaen for a 9-4 start but the Golden Tigresses responded behind Ennajie Laure to come to within 12-9.
However, that proved to be the last stand by the Golden Tigresses as the Transformers pulled away behind Valdez and Lilet Mabbayad for a 22-12 lead. Errors by the Golden Tigresses in the end gave the win to the Transformers.
Despite suffering its first loss in five matches, the Emilio Reyes-mentored Golden Tigresses remained on top of the standings and has secured a seat to the semifinals round./PN
