ILOILO City – The Mabilo Community Fish Landing Center in Kalibo, Aklan, the third fish landing facility in the province, was inaugurated on Oct. 12.
The P2.85-million facility aims to reduce post-harvest losses, serve as hub for economic activities, and improve conditions in coastal communities.
Mabilo in Aklan was one of the areas identified for the establishment of Community Fish Landing Centers (CFLC) based on poverty incidence, municipal density, number of registered fisherfolk, fish production, and existing fish ports and landing centers.
The establishment of CFLCs is under the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources’ (BFAR) priority program dubbed Targeted Actions to Reduce Poverty and Generate Economic Transformation. This initiative is an inter-agency collaboration headed by BFAR, and in partnership with the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC), Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA), and the local government unit.
NAPC secretary Liza L. Maza, BFAR regional director Remia A. Aparri, Assistant Director Drusila Esther E. Bayate and the Aklan LGU led the inauguration of the fish landing center.
With the success in the construction of CFLCs in the country, Bayate disclosed the proposed establishment of 202 CFLCs nationwide for 2017. BFAR has set up 252 and 271 fish landing centers in 2015 and 2016, respectively.
Department of Agriculture (DA) assistant secretary for Visayas Atty. Hansel O. Didulo voiced his full support for the CFLC and expressed optimism for the development of the. He furthermore said the facility is “very timely” with the mandate of DA to provide food and create jobs for fisherfolk.
On her part, Maza said the mandate of NAPC is to closely monitor the project. She also challenged the fisherfolk of Barangay Mabilo to yield excellent report during the conduct of evaluation on its first year of operation.
The local government of Kalibo headed by Mayor William S. Lachica together with Podlonian Fisherfolks MPC organization accepted the challenge of Maza to properly maintain and manage the facility.
In June this year, two CFLCs were inaugurated in Barangay Bugtong-Bato, Ibajay and Poblacion, New Washington, Aklan.
The five established CFLCs in the region are in Barangay Pawa in Panay, Capiz, which was inaugurated in August; and Barangay Gogo in Estancia, Iloilo which was opened in September 2016. (PIA/PN)
