ILOILO City – Some 70 farmer members of the Iloilo City Wide Farmers Association (ICWFA) and Iloilo Organic Agriculture Alliance (ICOAAL) attended a Native Swine Project Orientation Seminar at the City Hall Penthouse recently.
The Office of the City Agriculturist initiated the native swine dispersal and raising program.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the initiative will provide livelihood opportunities to beneficiaries as well as promote organic farming in the metropolis.
At least 12 native piglets were dispersed to Monte Verde Farm in Barangay Bitoon, Jaro district for sow development targeting a re-dispersal of 120 piglets in two years for distribution to the association members.
The project was proposed by City Agriculture Office for funding by the Department of Agriculture.
Swine production is an important industry and is considered as one of the most popular and profitable business enterprise in the field of animal production.
Some factors that may attribute to the ever growing popularity and interest in swine raising are:
* pigs are prolific
* the demand for pork is high hence it is considered as one of the most favorite meat of most Filipinos
* it is also adopted to diversified farming, pork unlike other meats can be cured as ham.
