ILOILO City – The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) is ready to respond to emergencies this Nov. 1 (All Saints’ Day) and Nov. 2 (All Souls’ Day).
Its firefighters have been on heightened alert since Oct. 27, said Superintendent Jerry Candido, city fire marshal.
As part of BFP’s Oplan Kaluluwa, the bureau’s men have been roaming around the city reminding households, private establishments and government offices to be fire-conscious.
Of particular concern to the BFP are thickly-populated areas, said Candido.
BFP will also be posting teams in public cemeteries.
There were no fire incidents during last year’s observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day in the city, Candido revealed. He hoped it would be the same this year.
“Most fires are caused by candles left especially on altars, or by electrical appliances,” he said.
Just this Sunday, fire gutted four houses in Zone 5, Barangay Don Esteban, Lapuz. An unattended lit candle likely started the fire. Fire investigators discovered that a grandmother prayed for a grandchild who was taking the civil service examination.
“She left the candle on the altar then went out,” said Senior Fire Officer 1 Rolen Gimena.
The altar was made of plywood and covered with cloth.
The damage was estimated to have reached P300 thousand./PN
