ILOILO – A district hospital dentist died when the sport utility vehicle she was driving crashed into mahogany and narra trees yesterday.
Dr. Gladys Celiz-Montinola was rushed to the Dr. Ricardo S. Provido Sr. Memorial District Hospital in Calinog town, where she also works, but was declared “dead on arrival.”
Her husband Filbert, a seafarer, was at the passenger seat. He was taken to the West Visayas State University Medical Center in Jaro, Iloilo City for the treatment of his injury on the right leg and bruises on the chest.
The Montinolas were on board a Ford Everest on their way to the component city of Passi when the crash happened around 1 a.m. in Barangay Barrio, Calinog, initial investigation by the municipal police showed.
“Dasig siguro ang padalagan, tapos nag-overshoot sa dalan kay liku-on ang dira nga alagyan,” Senior Police Officer 4 Nilo Campos, deputy Calinog police chief, told Panay News.
But the police have yet to ascertain where the couple — residents of Barangay Dalid, Calinog — were really headed.
“We received information nga halin sila sa Barangay Guiso (Calinog) kay may alumni activity didto, then may gindul-ong nga upod nila pabalik diri [sa banwa] kag basi mabalik naman sila sa Guiso,” said Campos.
It took the responding police officers and hospital personnel three hours to retrieve the body of Dr. Montinola.
“Sumulod ang salakyan between a mahogany and a narra tree. Na-retrieve dayon ang bana, but ang asawa three hours pa,” said Campos. “Nag-compress gid ang salakyan sa puno. Naipit ang driver, nag-awas lawas niya sa bintana.”/PN
