IN THE past few months we have seen growth in the Iloilo art scene: a vibrant and flourishing affair.
The city’s art venues — Casa Real Gallery, Cinematheque Iloilo, Museo Iloilo, among others —never ran out of artworks and masterpieces by both veteran and emerging Ilonggo artists adorning their walls.
Now we witness the creativity and ingenuity of young artists spill onto the streets.
Leading up to the largest and longest-running art biennale in the Philippines — the Visayas Islands Visual Arts Exhibit and Conference, or ViVa ExCon — local artists partnered with Atria Park District to unveil public art on Friday.
“Art@Atria” features four locations at the commercial complex becoming canvases of Iloilo Visual Artists Collective (IVAC) members Andrea Bagarinao, Kristoffer George Brasileño, Ronn Bulahan, and Kinno Florentino.
“The designs depict the rendition of the artists of their idea of Iloilo: its people, places, and flora and fauna,” the organizers explained.
Brasileño, the IVAC president, said their mural at Atria Park is “possibly the biggest art piece [he’s] made to date.”
Rendered in vivid colors, the young artists did most of the painting at night. Brasileño said that, for their mural, they started just four days before the project’s unveiling.
Other artists who participated in making these public art pieces were Kat Malazarte, Marge Chavez, Larry Vido, Marion Lamaslig, Nel Montelijao, Jonn Laserna, and Carl Bagarinao.
“The mural project is only a component of Ayala’s bigger support of the holding in Iloilo of the country’s biggest and longest art biennale this November,” said Rock Drilon, chairman of the 2016 ViVa ExCon organizing committee.
“We are inviting the Ilonggo public to join [us, and we hope] you continue to support the local art and culture scene in Iloilo,” Drilon added.
Aside from Drilon, also supporting the public art installation were Reynard Coloso Buga-ay of Atria Park District, Daniella Julieta Caro, Jo Andrew Acejo Torlao, Allyn May Canja, Eric Barbosa Jr., Christian Evren Gimotea Lozañes, and Engr. Mars Botenes.
Iloilo will host the 2016 ViVa ExCon from Nov. 17 to 20. Themed “Hakos: Embracing the Art of the Islands,” ViVa ExCon aims to foster fellowship among artists and bridge the gap between Visayas islands to form one vibrant art community./PN
