MANILA – Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian called on President Rodrigo Duterte to “certify as urgent” his proposal to ban the use of firecrackers and fireworks.
Gatchalian has filed a bill that prohibits the sale, distribution, and use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices for recreational purposes.
If enacted into law, the measure will “minimize or even eliminate firecracker-related injuries during the 2016 Christmas season,” the newbie senator said.
Under Senate Bill No. 1140, authorized large-scale pyrotechnic shows shall be exempted from the general prohibition.
Last Monday, Duterte said he is not keen on imposing the ban on firecrackers this year.
In an interview with Japanese television station NHK, the President said they have yet to discuss the proposal with stakeholders.
In 2002, the then mayor of Davao City approved City ordinance 060-02, banning firecrackers.
A year prior to its implementation, however, the official already stopped issuing business permits to vendors and malls selling firecrackers and pyrotechnics. The city also banned firecrackers during Chinese New year and the end of Ramadan./PN
