BACOLOD City – All barangays here were encouraged to support the “Adopt an Estero” Program of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
The Water Body Program seeks collaboration among communities along esteros, or creeks, and rivers, local government units, private sector, and the DENR to achieve a cleaner, safer and healthier environment, the Sangguniang Panlungsod said in a resolution.
It is in response to the continuing mandamus of the Supreme Court for all government agencies to clean up Manila Bay and the waterways that drain into it, said Councilor Cindy Rojas, author of the resolution.
“It also aims to institutionalize public-private community partnership in environmental management; institutionalize good sanitation and solid waste management practices through education and actual participation in the management of esteros; clean up the esteros of wastes, debris and silt; and mobilize the local communities in cleaning esteros,” Rojas said.
Meanwhile the chair of the committee on environment and ecology said the city council is also enjoining Bacolodnons to observe the Environmental Awareness Month.
The Environmental Awareness Month is observed every November by virtue of Republic Act 9512, or the National Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008.
Public awareness on the preservation and protection of the environment must be continuously raised, Rojas stressed.
She said the City Environment and Natural Resources Office is responsible for informing the locals on current environmental updates and must be at the frontline in delivering services related to environment and natural resources./PN
