BACOLOD City – The city government is partnering with the fishery infrastructure arm of the Department of Agriculture (DA) in putting up and managing the Bacolod City Fish Port in Barangay Banago.
A memorandum of agreement (MOA) between city hall and the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) is up for signing.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod has granted Mayor Evelio Leonardia the authority to sign the deal with PFDA general manager Patrick Joseph Javier.
Leonardia is currently on leave for a travel abroad. He has not said when he will return. He designated Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran as acting mayor “until his return,” Memorandum Order No. 183 stated.
“Cognizant of the need for fishery postharvest facilities to service its vast marine resources,” the city government “made representations with the [DA] for the construction of a fish port in Barangay Banago,” read part of the MOA.
The PFDA also found the need to “facilitate the proper unloading and handling of fish and other fishery products in the locality.”
Primarily the initiative aims to “establish an accessible infrastructure terminal for the unloading or loading of fish and other aquatic products” and “[centralize] fish trading activities in the area.”
Aside from “[reducing] spoilage of fishery products,” the Bacolod City Fish Port targets to “develop and boost the fishing industry of the city.”
It shall also serve to “[generate] fishery economic and statistical data benchmark for research purposes in pursuance of tracking the fisheries development road map of the national government,” the MOA stated.
Through PFDA, the DA is “mandated to provide postharvest infrastructures and technical assistance aimed to boost the development of the country’s fishery industry.”
The PFDA is “empowered to prepare, adopt and implement comprehensive plans for the overall development of fish ports and complexes within its jurisdiction.”/PN
