Balancing: A game nations play

FROM 1939 to 1945 saw the war games played among members of the Allied and Axis Powers. World War II was a major war pitting Germany, Italy and Japan against Great Britain, France and the Soviet Union (USSR), and the United States of America. The political arena was the show of mighty nations who fought for dominion over others.
As stealth is one of the elements of war, it was employed by Japan in bombing Pearl Harbor.
To stop once and for all the holocaust that gripped the whole world, USA dropped atomic bombs — the “Little Boy” and the “Fat Man” in Nagasaki and Hiroshima. These were warnings of reality that if ever World War III breaks out, it will be a war that nobody wins.
The 1980s was characterized by the proliferation of war weapons of death and destruction: the race between super powers USA and USSR, the “Balance of Terror” chosen to counter each move by the major power players.
Subsequently, there were talks, summits and conferences on limiting the production of lethal weapons that shall surely wipe out humanity on the face of the earth.
From the balance of power to “balancing of terror,” games have been played by powerful nations to achieve “peace.”
Today, mighty nations have shifted to trade, commerce, technology, economy, labor market, and control of valuable geopolitical territorial areas essential in the game nations play.
Lest we forget, the cultural game played in the mind, history, language, convictions, and sentiments of the people is the most potent and lasting battlefield in the game played by nations that lord over the weak ones.
How does President Rodrigo Duterte play his game? Doesn’t he want change in our frame of mind?
That is culture. Read the signs of time. No one dared flirting with other powers. He does. We are stakeholders. What do you think? (delsocorrodaquila@gmail.com/PN)
