ILOILO – A police officer assigned at the Iloilo Police Provincial Public Safety Company accused of killing a stabbing suspect two years ago voluntarily surrendered to the police station of Lemery town yesterday.
Around 8:30 a.m., Police Officer 3 Ariel Aragona surrendered to Senior Inspector Elmer Villareal, Lemery police chief. He also gave up his service firearm, an M16 armalite rifle.
Aragona said received information that Judge Globert Justalero of the Regional Trial Court, Branch 66 issued an arrest warrant against him for the crime of murder.
Aragona together with his superior, Senior Inspector Darius Amar, were accused of killing Recil Tolentino who stabbed dead Lanelyn Palmes on April 13, 2014 in Barangay Anabo, Lemery.
Tolentino was reportedly wooing Palmes but stabbed her dead for jilting him.
The police of Lemery headed by Amar, then the Lemery police chief, chased and arrested Tolentino in Barangay General Luna, Barotac Viejo town.
Barangay General Luna was a remote barangay.
A handcuffed Tolentino was made to sit on the back of a motorcycle driven by Aragona. Amar was following them on another motorcycle. They were supposed to bring the suspect back to Lemery.
But Tolentino allegedly tried to grab Aragona’s firearm; they both fell on the ground and grappling for the gun ensued.
Armar came to Aragona’s rescue. He shot Tolentino.
Tolentin died.
Amar and Aragona claimed they only defended themselves.
Amar was relieved from his post and reassigned to the Iloilo Police Provincial Office.
Aragona was detained yesterday at the lockup cell of the Lemery police station./PN
