Bravo, Mocha Uson!

“I am not a journalist. It is public knowledge that I am a Duterte supporter so don’t ask for balanced reporting since that is the job of the mainstream media. But if you are affected by people unfollowing you and following my blog then maybe it is time for you to start being balanced in your way of reporting. And for some Facebook pages, maybe it is time for you to stop doing things for money and start helping your country.” – Mocha Uson, “I have the right to speak”, Hotspot, The Philippine Star, Nov. 8, 2016

FOR SOMEONE who says she is not a journalist Mocha Uson is far better than those who claim or pretend they are journalists. Her blogs/articles are honest with no pretensions; she speaks from the heart and is the voice of “everyman/woman” who wants change and to break free from the hypocrisy of the oligarchs.
Really what is a journalist?
According to Wikipedia, a journalist is a person who collects, writes or distributes news or other current information. A journalist’s work is called journalism. A journalist can work with general issues or specialize in certain issues.
And what is journalism?
Again according to Wikipedia, journalism is the activity of gathering, assessing, creating, and presenting news and information. It is also the product of these activities.
So based on these definitions Mocha Uson is definitely not a journalist in the true sense of the word. So what in the world is she aside from being a sexy, beautiful cover girl of FHM Magazine?
By definition she is a columnist and again, according to Wikipedia, a columnist is someone who writes for publication in a series, creating an article that usually offers commentary and opinions.
Columns appear in newspapers, magazines and other publications, including blogs. They take the form of a short essay by a specific writer who offers a personal point of view. So there, we have defined what Mocha Uson is and to be more specific, she is a columnist who has no qualms about her biases, in this case her being a supporter of President Rodrigo Duterte.
So what makes her so special aside from the obvious that pissed off Regina Belmonte, daughter of the President of the Philippine Star newspaper, when she learned that Mocha Uson is going to be a columnist in the newspaper her grandmother founded?
For starters, Mocha Uson has four million engaged followers while Regina’s columns in the Philippine Star (obviously) “Lost in the World” and “Read my Lipstick” has barely any readers at all. In a span of one year both columns have less than 300 likes in both Twitter and Facebook.
And this is what blogger Sass Rogando Sasot wrote about Regina Belmonte, Regina, smell the coffee:
“Girl, here are the stats of your column in Philippine Star from 2015-2016. All your articles from 2015-2016 got tweeted 132 times, shared on FB 277 times, and liked on FB 195 times. Take note: total na iyan ng lahat ng articles mo from 2015-2016.
“Who let you continue writing for Philippine Star given the horrendously poor performance of your articles? If you were not a Belmonte, girl, you would have been fired from the Philippine Star, and that space would have been given to people who could actually command a following.”
Definitely, Mocha Uson’s entry into the OP-ED page of the Philippine Star is a marketing move as who can ignore the power of four million engaged followers? But this is not to say that her voice is not relevant as she is the voice of 16 million Duterte people.
Let’s talk about if she can write and I can say this: yes, she can and in fact she’s miles ahead of Regina Belmonte. She writes about her opinions on issues relevant to the lives of “everyman/woman” while Regina talks about her lipstick.
Just because you’re a graduate of Mass Communications or the like it does not make you a journalist/writer as this one is from the heart – either you’re born with it or not, no matter what diplomas you have.
If Regina is not a Belmonte I bet my dog’s balls she would not even have space in Panay News. Let me put it this way: Compared to Roeyna May Famisaran, Rhick Lars Vladimer Albay, Merriane Grace Ereneta, and Glenda Sologastoa, this Regina Belmonte pales in comparison. I’ll take those four anytime over Regina Belmonte./PN
