MANILA – The F2 Logistics Cargo Movers got back on the winning track in the 2016 Philippine Superliga Grand Prix with a 25-16, 25-16, 22-25, 25-16 win over the Cignal HD Spikers on Saturday at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center in Bulacan.
American reinforcement Hayley Spelman led the way with 23 points, on 21 attacks and two blocks, for the Cargo Movers, which moved up to solo third place with a 4-3 win-loss slate.
Cha Cruz chipped in 11 markers, while Sydney Kemper contributed 10 points for the All-Filipino Conference titlist Cargo Movers, which recovered from a 25-22, 25-19, 25-10 loss to the Petron Tri-Activ Spikers last Thursday.
The Cargo Movers jumped to an 8-4 lead in the opening set behind Spelman and Ara Galang. The HD Spikers rallied to within two points but the Cargo Movers pulled to a 16-10 lead behind Aby Maraño and Spelman.
After back-to-back scores by the HD Spikers, the Cargo Movers widened the lead to 20-12 behind Spelman. The HD Spikers made its last push to come to within six points but Spelman and Maraño converted one each to take the set.
Both teams exchanged points early in the second frame with the score knotted at 10-all but the Cargo Movers relied on back-to-back hits by Kemper, as well as conversions by Cruz and Maraño for a 16-13 lead.
The HD Spikers was able to come to within two points anew after the break but conversions by Kemper gave the Cargo Movers a 22-16 edge. Another hit by Mika Reyes gave them a 2-0 set lead.
After dropping the third set, the Cargo Movers recovered from an early deficit in the fourth frame to surge to an 11-8 lead behind Spelman. The HD Spikers cut it to 11-10 before the Cargo Movers pulled to a 16-12 lead behind Spelman and Cyd Demecillo.
Back-to-back hits by Demecillo and Cruz extended the Cargo Movers’ lead to 19-12. Maraño, Cruz and Kemper then connived for a huge finishing run to claim the victory for the Cargo Movers.
Janine Marciano top-scored with 11 points, while Stephanie Mercado chipped in 10 markers for the HD Spikers, which slid down to fifth place in the standings with a 1-4 win-loss slate./PN
