ILOILO City – Were the white crystalline substance seized recently from the inmates of the Iloilo District Jail (IDJ) in Barangay Nanga, Pototan, Iloilo shabu or tawas?
The crime laboratory of the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) has yet to release the result of its examination.
The IDJ will base its next moves on the result, said Jail Senior Inspector Abner Zamora, warden.
If these were shabu, IDJ will investigate how the sachets were slipped into the prison facility, said Zamora.
Three plastic sachets containing white crystalline substance were recovered during a surprise inspection of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) at the IDJ on Nov. 11.
“We will wait for the result of laboratory analysis. Our disciplinary board will act based on the result,” said Zamora.
Other items seized were a knife, a pair of scissors, a cellular phone and charger, SIM cards, lighters, a hammer, nail pushers, and power banks.
Zamora said one of the inmates claimed his tawas (alum) was mistaken for shabu and confiscated.
Tawas is a salt crystal more popularly used as a deodorant and astringent. There are other uses for this substance that found its niche in folkloric medicine.
“That is why we are waiting na lang sang result kun ano gid man ato,” said Zamora.
As for the cell phone and charger, Zamora said there is an ongoing investigation how these entered the jail.
“Hugot ang inspection sa gate pa lang. Hibaluon naton kun diin nag agi,” said Zamora.
Superintendent Marlon Tayaba, CIDG-6 director, said he does not believe the jail guards helped the inmates smuggle the recovered items inside.
“Wala namang indications that they’re involved,” said Tayaba.
The CIDG also inspected the Iloilo City District Jail and recovered cutters, pairs of scissors, a plastic bottle containing rugby, shavers, playing cards, lighters, needles and blades./PN
