Sneak burial fit for Marcos

HE RULED SNEAKILY. He was buried sneakily.
The sneaky burial of deposed dictator Ferdinand Marcos yesterday was perhaps fitting for the man who plundered the country for over two decades and violated human rights with impunity.
His interment was stealthy, devious and underhanded. But we are not surprised. Marcos lived and ruled stealthily, deviously and underhandedly. His blitzkrieg burial yesterday at the Libingan ng mga Bayani was thus very appropriate for him.
Even so, the secretive manner in which the burial was held spoke volumes of how far authorities were willing to go just to change the course of history. And his interment at the Libingan would remain a grave travesty against the Filipino people. This will not result in the healing of the nation. This clandestine burial will go down in history as one of the most traitorous moves meant to subvert the judgment of history.
The unlamentable burial spoke volumes, too, of the Marcos family’s continuing fear of the wrath of the Filipino people. And rightly so; they remain unrepentant, unapologetic and do not recognize the dark martial law years of the dictator. The Marcoses did not even wait for the finality of the Supreme Court decision on the dictator’s burial.
The deposed president was not worthy of emulation, much less the honor of being considered a hero. He left the Philippines a bankrupt, rotten killing field.
Even in his burial, Marcos remained true to his duplicitous character. In the words of Bayan Muna party-list congressman Carlos Isagani Zarate: “Hanggang sa huli, panakaw pa rin ang naging tatak ng diktador: ninakaw ng mga Marcoses ang due process.”
