SAN JOSE, Antique – Roads leading to tourist destinations in the province are being upgraded.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 6 has allocated P310.509 million for the initiative.

Officials believe more tourists will head to tourist destinations with better roads, and this will boost Antique’s tourism and economy.

An 11.296-kilometer gravel road from Barangay San Antonio to Barangay Flores in Culasi town, leading to Mt. Madia-as, which is known for waterfalls and mountain trekking, is being paved, Regional Director Wenceslao Leaño Jr. said.

Costing P70 million, the project is funded under the 2016 budget.

The DPWH Region 6 is also paving the road from Barangay Villahermosa to Sitio Apong in Barangay Cabladan in Sibalom.

The project costs P200 million. The Antique District Engineering Office (DEO) is supervising it.

Leaño said the road leads to several tourist destinations, including the Sibalom Natural Park; waterfalls; areas for Rafflesia spesiosa viewing, gemstone hunting and mountain trekking; Lake Pako, and Bato Pispis.

Meanwhile Antique DEO district engineer Gerald Pacanan said they are also paving another tourism road, the 3.60-kilometer Santo Rosario-Malumpati Road in Pandan, which leads to the Malumpati Health Spring and Tourist Resort and the Bug-ang River.

Pacanan said the DEO allotted P60.509 million for the project. (PNA)
