MANILA – The TNT Katropa completed its fight back from 14 points down to score a 108-103 win over the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings in the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Down by as much as 14 points, 95-81, in the final quarter, the Katropa went on a 12-0 scoring run behind Ranidel de Ocampo, Moala Tautuaa, Jeth Troy Rosario, and Matthew Ganuelas-Rosser to come to within 95-92.
After the Kings increased the lead to 98-92 on a basket by LA Tenorio, De Ocampo drained back-to-back hits to tie the score at 99-all. The Kings took the lead at 102-99 on a triple by Earl Scottie Thompson, but the Katropa tied it anew on a trey by De Ocampo.
After a split from the line by the Kings, the Katropa finally took the lead at 104-103 on a basket by Kelly Williams. They later sealed the come-from-behind victory behind free throws by Roger Pogoy and Larry Fonacier.
De Ocampo led the way with 22 points, with 15 coming in the final quarter, for the Katropa, which bounced back from a 101-87 loss to the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters to level its win-loss slate to 1-1.
Pogoy and Fonacier chipped in 15 points apiece while Tautuaa and Rosario each contributed 12 markers for the Katropa, which continue to miss the services of Jayson Castro.
“It feels good to finally get a win,” said Katropa assistant coach Josh Reyes. “I just want to give credit to the whole team the other assistant coaches, our management and the players for trusting this whole process.”
Tenorio top-scored with 27 points, while Japeth Aguilar and Joe Devance contributed 15 markers apiece for the Kings, which slid down to 0-1 with the Meralco Bolts, Star Hotshots, Phoenix Fuel Masters, Mahindra Floodbuster, and Alaska Aces./PN
