MANILA – The RC Cola-Army Lady Troopers clinched a semifinals seat in the 2016 Philippine Superliga Grand Prix with a 25-20, 25-19, 25-19 victory over the Generika Life Savers in the playoff round on Sunday night at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Completing the semifinals cast is the PSL All-Filipino Conference champion F2 Logistics Cargo Movers, which smothered the Cignal HD Spikers, 25-17, 25-16, 22-25, 25-10.
Import Hailie Ripley finally showed up for the Lady Troopers as she delivered 10 kills and a pair of blocks for 12 points, while Guimaras-native Jovelyn Gonzaga chipped in 13 points.
Lady Troopers assistant coach Rico de Guzman, who called the shots in lieu of head coach Emilio Reyes, admitted that they paid special attention to the development of Ripley and Kierra Holst.
“We don’t have problem on the offense end. Our problem is the footwork of our two imports as well as our blocking and reception. So we focused on those areas,” said de Guzman.
Sydney Kemper, meanwhile, had 18 points while fellow import Hayley Spelman finished with 17 markers for the Cargo Movers, which collapsed in the third set but bounced back with a 13-2 lead in the deciding set en route to a huge 22-6 advantage.
“We lost focus on the third set. Fortunately, the girls came back strong on the fourth,” said F2 Logistics coach Ramil de Jesus, who is looking to come up with a fitting followup to their title conquest last conference.
The Cargo Movers will face second seed Petron Tri-Activ Spikers while the Lady Troopers will tackle defending champion Foton Tornadoes in the semifinals round on Saturday at the Ibalong Centrum for Recreation in Legazpi City./PN
