ILOILO City – Policemen are prohibited from accepting or soliciting gifts, most especially this holiday season, said Chief Superintendent Jose Gentiles, director of the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6).

Soliciting, such as for the police’s Christmas parties, violates the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standard for Public Officials and Employees or Republic Act 6713 (RA), he explained.

Under RA 6713, public officials and employees shall not solicit or accept directly or indirectly, any gift, gratuity, favor, entertainment, loan or anything of monetary value from any person in the course of their official duties, in connection with any operation being regulated by, or any transaction which may be affected by the functions of their office.

“It is a continuing policy of the police every holiday season, especially in celebrating Christmas parties, not to accept or solicit gifts,” stressed Gentiles.

The Philippine National Police is maintaining this policy to promote positive values and attitudes within the rank and file of the PNP and enhance public trust, he explained.

“We won’t accept gifts from some businessmen, politicians or other individuals who could influence our functions,” Gentiles added.

Fund-raising activities in the form of raffle tickets, donations, bingo games and sweepstakes are also prohibited, said the police general./PN
