KALIBO, Aklan – Dangling and tangled wires of utility and cable companies still hover on the streets of this capital town.

It appears that the companies have taken no action five years since an ordinance requiring them to “rehabilitate” their unsightly wires was passed.

If this inaction continues, Kalibo may get entangled in “spaghetti wires” for good, a municipal councilor warned.

Dangling wires pose “great risk to human life and property,” make a negative impression on tourism and hamper future developments, Philip Kimpo said.

He said the Sangguniang Bayan (SB) noticed that the companies failed to “rehabilitate their installations and untangle the wires” five years since Municipal Ordinance No. 2011-016 was approved.

Even posts and cable lines of the Bureau of Telecommunications, or Butelco (later named the Department of Transportation and Communications Telecommunications Office) are still up downtown.

The SB asked the Department of Information and Communications Technology to allow the municipal government to remove the Butelco posts and cable lines from Mabini Street up to Osmeña Avenue.

On Friday, Dec. 9 telephone and cable companies, including Aklan Cable Television Company, Panay Telephone Company, Cruztelco, Kalibo Cable Television Network, and other telcos will give the SB an update on their rehab efforts.

The telcos and cable companies must prioritize the bundling of wires along the Ati-Atihan Festival route, stressed Kimpo, chairman of the committee on tourism, promotions and special events.

They must also submit to the SB a report on the status of their rehabilitation work at the end of each quarter, he said. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
