MANILA – The F2 Logistics Cargo Movers salvaged a third place finish in the 2016 Philippine Superliga Grand Prix following a 25-13, 25-20, 20-25, 20-25, 18-16 win over the RC Cola-Army Lady Troopers at the San Juan Arena.
With the score tied at 14-all, Mika Reyes unleashed a lightning-quick go-ahead kill down the crucial stretch, as Lady Troopers import Kierra Holst committed an error to seal the win.
Reyes, who was part of the team that competed in the FIVB Women’s Club World Championship last October, finished with nine hits, but also made her presence felt in defense as she deflected numerous attacks.
American reinforcement Hayley Spelman led the way with 25 points, on 23 attacks and two blocks, for the Cargo Movers, which clinched the third place trophy with the win over the Lady Troopers.
Passi, Iloilo-native Abigail Maraño added 14 markers, while Ara Galang contributed 12 points for the Cargo Movers, which failed to follow up on its title finish in the All-Filipino Conference.
“Naramdaman ko na medyo nawala ang kapit namin nung third and fourth sets,” said Cargo Movers head coach Ramil de Jesus. “Lumuwag ang depensa namin. Mabuti na lang at nag-step up ang mga bata nung fifth set. Ayaw din nilang magpatalo.”
Holst, meanwhile, top-scored with 21 points while Guimaras-native Jovelyn Gonzaga added 19 markers for the Lady Troopers, which settled for fourth place after a third-place finish in the PSL All-Filipino Conference early this year.
Defending champion Foton Tornadoes and the Petron Tri-Activ Spikers, meanwhile, are still figuring in Game 2 of their best-of-three championship showdown as of press time. The Tornadoes can clinch the crown with just one more victory as Petron attempts to force a do-or-die Game 3./PN
