MANILA – The Arellano University Lady Chiefs continued its hot start in the NCAA Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament with a 25-22, 25-22, 25-14 sweep over the San Beda Red Lionesses at the San Juan Arena.
Jovielyn Prado led the way with 14 points, including 13 attacks and one block, for the Lady Chiefs, which moved to a share of the second spot in the standings with a 4-1 win-loss slate.
Mary Anne Esguerra chipped in 11 markers, while Andrea Marzan and Rialen Sante contributed 10 points each for the Lady Chiefs, which is on a three-game winning run.
The two teams were knotted in a tight exchange in the first two sets with none between the Lady Chiefs and the Red Lionesses pulling away. But the former’s tight net defense served as their ace.
The Red Lionesses started strong in the third set as it built an early edge but the Lady Chiefs took advantage of the Red Lionesses errors to complete the straight set win.
“Yung hinahanap ko (na performance) sa kanila hindi ko pa nakikita,” said Lady Chiefs head coach Obet Javier. “Kulang pa sa jell ang team ko, nape-pressure pa. Siguro mas gaganda pa ang laro namin (in the coming games).”
Franchesca Racraquin finished with 14 points to lead the way for the Red Lionesses, which suffered its second loss in the last three matches after a 2-0 win-loss start in the season.
Meanwhile, the University of Perpetual Help Lady Altas cruised to its third straight win with a straight-set domination over the still win-less Colegio de San Juan de Letran Lady Knights, 29-27, 25-15, 25-21./PN
