ILOILO City – More than 100 small vendors based at the transport terminal in Barangay Tagbak, Jaro district received P5,000 each from the city government.
The cash assistance aimed to help micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by providing them with additional capital.
“We would like to strengthen this program to extend more livelihood and employment opportunities to our constituents, especially to our micro businesses,” said Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.
The assistance was the first aid provided by the city government to the vendors.
The recipients and the amount of assistance were determined by the City Social Welfare and Development Office.
In December 2015, vendors at the Tagbak transport terminal suffered heavily when a rival bus transport terminal opened in the adjacent Barangay Camalig, also in Jaro. Passengers moved to this new bus terminal, thereby adversely affecting the income of the vendors.
No vendors were initially allowed at the new bus terminal in Barangay Camalig. The city government did not offer any financial assistance to the Tagbak transport terminal vendors, too, but it managed to convince the operator of the bus terminal in Barangay Camalig to allow some vendors to operate in its premises.
