ILOILO City – The National Nutrition Council (NNC) in Western Visayas reported a reduction in the prevalence of malnutrition in the region.
Specifically, the malnutrition rate among preschool children dropped to five percent when compared with the 5.58 percent malnutrition rate in 2015.
However, NNC regional director Nona Tad-y noted an increasing prevalence of over-nutrition among children in the region. She hoped to address this concern this year.
Over-nutrition leading to overweight and obesity is increasing rapidly among low and middle-income countries, increasing the prevalence of chronic non-communicable diseases and associated healthcare costs, according to the World Health Organization.
Tad-y attributed the reduction in malnutrition prevalence to the continuous support of local government units, especially local chief executives, and the collaborative efforts of concerned agencies like the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Department of Agriculture.
This new year, NNC s poised to strengthen the implementation of nutrition programs, starting off with the regional launching of the new Philippine Action Plan for Nutrition (PPAN) 2017-2022, say Tad-y.
PPAN 2017-2022 is an integral component and a companion plan of the Philippine Development Plan (PDP) 2017-2022, which provides the framework for improving the nutritional status of all Filipinos.
PPAN is composed of 11 programs and 40 projects intended to improve the nutrition status of individuals.
Included in the plan is to consistently reduce the prevalence of malnutrition among preschool children.
Tad-y said Antique, which had a malnutrition prevalence rate of 6.8 percent, was still the province with the highest malnutrition rate.
NNC already discussed the concern with Antique governor Rhodora Cadiao and she expressed willingness to strengthen their interventions to lower the prevalence of malnutrition in their province, said Tad-y.
She also expressed her optimism to increase manpower through additional Barangay Nutrition Scholars and Nutrition Action officers. (PNA)
