ILOILO City – No cases of stray bullet injuries and deaths were recorded in Western Visayas during the recent holidays, according to the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6).
During the 2015 Christmas and 2016 New Year revelries, on the other hand, the regional police recorded five victims of stray bullets, said Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, PRO-6 spokesperson.
“The holiday season was peaceful,” he concluded.
The PRO-6 received reports of five cases of indiscriminate firing but the culprits were all civilians, Gorero added.
Meanwhile, although the Department of Health (DOH) recorded 63 firecracker-related injuries in Region 6 and Negros Occidental as of yesterday morning, the PRO-6 listed 37 only.
According to Superintendent Elmer Armada of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office, there was a deceased of 56.4 percent in the number of firecracker victims in the province.
“Our campaign against firecrackers was very effective. We urged people to instead use their money to buy food,” Armada said.
The Iloilo City Police office (ICPO) deemed as peaceful, too, the Christmas and New Year celebrations in this southern city.
“There were no stray bullet incidents and the number of firecracker victims dropped. This was perhaps due to our campaign against firecrackers and drunkenness,” said Senior Inspector Shella Mae Sangrines, city police spokesperson.
Senior Superintendent Remus Zacharias Canieso, city police director, banned binge drinking along the streets.
Across the country, the celebrations were “generally peaceful”, according to Philippine National Police chief Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa.
In a statement yesterday, congratulated the 160,000-strong police force, DOH other government agencies and local government units.
“I am particularly pleased with the DOH report of a 60-percent reduction in firecracker-related medical emergency cases recorded nationwide compared with the 5-year average recorded since (2010),” Dela Rosa said.
DOH earlier announced that injuries recorded throughout the holiday season totaled 350 – 60 percent lower compared to the same period (beginning Dec. 21, 2015 to Jan. 1, 2016). This was also lower than the five-year average from 2011 to 2015./PN
