ILOILO – A motorcycle-riding gunman shot dead a 59-year-old real estate broker in Barangay Daan Banwa, Estancia, Iloilo.
Sergio Bañes died of a gunshot wound on the back of his head yesterday around 11:45 a.m.
He was shot outside his store, according to Chief Inspector Johnny Tumambing, Estancia police chief.
The Estancia police was exploring Bañes’ land deals as possible crime motive.
Bañes reportedly claimed owning a vast tract of land in Barangay Daan Banwa, planned to convert this into a residential subdivision, and already sold some lots to interested buyers.
However, said Tumambing, some who already paid for their lots later learned that Bañes did not actually own the land.
They demanded a refund but Bañes’ failed to return their money, added the police official.
The victim was shot from behind by the motorcycle back rider.
“The gunman as wearing a cap,” said Tumambing, citing statements from witnesses.
Prior to the shooting, the gunman and his motorcycle driver acted as though they were interested to buy lots from Bañes and asked the victim some questions, said Tumambing.
“The assassination appeared to have been planned and the two men could be hired killers,” he said.
An empty bullet shell of a .45 pistol was recovered from the crime scene.
“We are coordinating with the victim’s live-in partner. She saw the faces of the suspects,” said Tumambing./PN
