ONE OF the subjects an AB Communication student is required to take and complete is Radio Production. In this class, students are taught how to produce materials for radio. The important elements a student needs to consider are: dialogue, sound effects, music, and sound techniques.

Dialogue refers to the spoken word uttered by radio talents. It is through dialogues that listeners understand the content of the program. Dialogues are an important aspect of a radio drama. Notice that in radio drama, the audience rely on the audio component to understand the story. Hence, if you are a writer for example, you need to write your plot well and create dialogues that touch the heart. In news or radio magazine program, the information that audience needs to know forms the dialogue.

Sound effects are sounds that recreate the actual sound heard in reality. One example is the ring of the telephone or the honk of the car.

SFX is the abbreviation of sound effects. It can be manually or digitally produced. There is a plethora of SFX sources on the internet. A radio production student can download these SFX as long as it is for free and there are no copyright issues.

The most simple definition of music, according to the dictionary, is sounds that are sung by voices or played on musical instruments. It is also defined as vocal, instrumental or mechanical sounds having rhythm, melody or harmony.

In radio production music is very important because it creates the mood of the program, shows the passage of time, serves as bridge or transition to one segment of the program to the other. There are other functions of music, however, these three are the most important.

There are different genres of music used in programs. These range from pop, instrumental, RnB, classical, alternative rock among others. A student producer must remember to choose music which is appropriate for the program. Normally, it is advised to use instrumental music in radio productions although one is not barred from using music with lyrics.

Sound techniques, on the other hand, are how the different sources of sound are mixed, whereby producing the whole radio program. There are different techniques that could be utilized. These are segue, crossfade, fade up, fade down or fade under, among others.

In radio production class, students are taught to execute these techniques one and by one. After this, they are told to apply the techniques in their respective radio programs.

A neophyte radio producer must understand these elements very well because these are fundamental concepts. To produce complex materials, one must familiarize oneself with the basic aspects.

Being in a radio production class allows the students to exercise their creativity in making their scripts, choosing their music and sound effects and in the execution of their materials. In this class, students are also trained to respond quickly to situations that demand immediate attention.

The production roles very crucial in radio production are the following: director, spinner, technical director, and perhaps talents.

The director is the one who calls the shot and decides on important matters.

The spinner is in-charge of the console board where mixing of sound is manipulated.

The technical director is tasked to record the whole conduct of the production.

Talents make or break the program. If you have lousy talents, the production will suffer. Talents must get the instructions quickly and must know how to make adlibs in the absence of scripts.

Being in a radio production class is truly fun and exciting./PN
