ILOILO City – An 11-year-old girl in Barangay Astorga, Badiangan, Iloilo was believed to have committed suicide because her cell phone was not brand new.
Christine Carnaje, a Grade 5 pupil of Janiuay Pilot Elementary School, was found hanging from the ceiling of their house around 4 p.m. on Jan. 2.
She was already dead, according to the police, citing statements from Carnaje’s 23-year-old brother John Dio, the one who discovered her.
Carnaje was alone in the house when she hanged herself, said Police Officer 2 Romy Alegarbe of Badiangan.
She used a rope around her neck, he added.
From what the investigators so far gathered, said Alegarbe, her parents and siblings teased Carnaje for her not brand new cell phone.
“She may have taken the teasing seriously,” said Alegarbe. “An elder sibling sent a new phone to the family.”
The girl’s family was also convinced this was a case of suicide and not murder, he added./PN
