BACOLOD City – Amid the government’s campaign against contractualization, 900 workers in Negros Island Region have been regularized, according to the regional office of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
Since August last year, 545 workers in Negros Occidental and 355 employees in Negros Oriental got regular employment, DOLE records showed.
They included employees in malls, restaurants, hotels, hospitals, department stores, and manufacturing companies.
But there is much more to be done to totally stop contractualization in Negros, said Cyril Ticao, head of the regional DOLE office.
Labor-only contracting refers to the practice of giving workers short-term contracts, mostly five months, and then firing them before they could get entitled to benefits of full-time employment.
Other workers are terminated every five months but rehired for the same duration, depriving them of mandatory benefits.
Ticao vowed to intensify the inspection of businesses and the positions subject to regularization.
The official said they hope to reach their 100-percent regularization target by the end of the year.
Strict enforcement of the suspension of registration of contractors and subcontractors in the region will be sustained, he said. (PNA)
