BACOLOD City – A total of 55 barangays in the Negros Island Region (NIR) are now considered cleared of illegal drugs, according to the latest figures released by the Police Regional Office (PRO)-18.

Records of the Regional Operations and Plans Division as of Jan. 6 showed that of the 55 villages, 31 were under the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (NOCPPO) while 24 were under the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office (NORPPO).

All barangays under the Bacolod City Police Office were still drug-affected.

A barangay is declared drug-cleared upon the validation of the local chief executive and issuance of a certification about such by the police chief after the evaluation of the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council (BADAC).

A barangay is considered highly-affected if more than 20 percent of its population are drug users; moderately affected, if two up to 20 percent of the population are drug users; and slightly drug-affected, if less than two percent of the population are users.

In Negros Occidental, among those declared drug-free were:

* barangays Tabao Rizal, Tibsoc and Baliwagan in San Enrique town

* barangays Dr. V.F. Gustilo and Celestino Villacin in Cadiz City
