“Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.”
– Roger Caras, photographer and writer

THEY may just be animals but pets, especially dogs, can feel as much a part of your family as your children or your siblings. They are man’s best friend, they don’t judge you, they will always be eager to be by your side whether you want them to or not (but most probably you want them to.) They live to please and love their owners.
It doesn’t matter what size your dog is. Whether it is a purebred or a mixed breed, whether you just have one or you have 20, whether they stink or smell like peppermint, dogs make a home complete.
They are a play mate for your kids, they can put a smile on your face when you have a bad day, even though they may actually be the cause of your bad day sometimes after they break your prized vase or eat up your rose bush, there is no way you could stay mad after staring into those big brown puppy-dog eyes.
Ever since I was a kid, there would always be dogs in the house. Not just in my house too, all my relatives and friends had their little furry companions too. Even though I am an only child I never felt alone because my playmates were the numerous canines that had free range of my grandparent’s home. I would always end the day covered in fur and smelling of dog.
That’s why, when a dog passes away, it can one of the most painful things that can happen in your life. In the words of my grandfather “when your dog dies it is as if a part of you dies with it.” Even though they are just animals, you feel the hole their absence leaves when they pass away. That’s one of the things a pet owner has to prepare themselves for but even though I have been going through this since I was a kid, I still cry buckets whenever one of our dogs pass away.
There’s this old cartoon that I watched as a kid called All Dogs Go to Heaven. As the title shows, whenever a dog dies all of them go straight to heaven. I can see why they would make this reference since dogs can even be kinder to humans than other humans are. They don’t care what you look like or where you are on the social scale. They don’t care what your job or your identity is. They don’t expect anything from you in return and everything they do is out of love.
There are times when I wish dog heaven was real. A paradise where all the loyal companions go and can eat all the dog food and rose bushes they want after their mission here on Earth. A place where they can be as happy as they were with their owners forever.
Heaven is where dogs deserve to go and I hope they all end up there somehow./PN
