BACOLOD City – Chief Superintendent Renato Gumban suggested that business establishments install caller IDs to counter bomb and terror threats and hoaxes.

The city government may introduce an ordinance requiring all businesses to have such device, the Police Regional Office 18 director said.

Several bomb hoaxes have been reported in this city, the latest was at the VMA Global College and the VMA Training Center on Monday.

Gumban also sternly warned would-be terror and bomb pranksters, especially with upcoming Asean meetings next month.

Police have the technology to trace mobile phone and landline numbers, and those who will be caught will be imprisoned, he said.

“I’m willing to pour in the entire resources and millions of pesos from the regional police force just to go after you,” Gumban stressed.

He said the number of police officers on streets and in areas of convergence will be increased during the Asean meetings.

“Security measures are already in place,” Gumban said. “Major malls have doubled their security officers, all trained in handling bomb threats.”

While there are no terror threats in the region, the public must remain on guard and report to the police any suspicious individual or package, he added.

“We assume the police know better, they know best,” Mayor Evelio Leonardia said.

While the police are taking the lead in security, “we need everybody’s cooperation,” he said, urging the public to “feed” the authorities relevant information “so they can warn us.”

Leonardia also stressed that the penalty against making bomb jokes and hoaxes should be strictly enforced./PN
