BACOLOD City – Will an anticrime campaign tailor-made for this capital city work?
Yesterday the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) launched Oplan Bakbak, or “Bacolod Kontra Krimen (Bacolod Against Crime),” a brainchild of Senior Superintendent Jack Wanky, officer-in-charge.
Superintendent Noel Polines, BCPO operations chief, said the campaign has three phases.
The first phase involves pooling all available resources from the stations, City Public Safety Company, and mobile patrol and traffic groups, and immediate tactical intervention, said Polines.
Operations involve mobile checkpoints and patrol, foot and beat patrol, police visibility, and assistance to traffic and dragnet operations, all aimed at addressing “present threats undermining peace and order.”
Tapping barangay officials and force multipliers to complement Barangay Ronda and other crime-prevention programs is the second phase, while the third phase involves training all officers involved in the campaign to enhance their skills.
During the launch, Pastor Enrique Cansino officiated the blessing of the BCPO’s mobile patrols and equipment.
“Due to recent developments, the BCPO crafted an anticrime strategy intensifying operation through active visibility patrols and rapid deployment of personnel riding in motorcycles,” Polines said.
Recent crimes perpetrated by armed people riding in tandem in motorcycles or using motorcycles as getaway vehicles made the police scamper for suspects and turned them into an object of criticism from local government and business officials.
Mayor Evelio Leonardia attended the launching. He thanked the police for the project. He said he wants the locals to feel safe and protected.
He urged the BCPO to “give special attention to businesses” not because they are special but because many people depend on them, including their employees.
Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran, police station commanders and other BCPO personnel were present./PN
